We were first introduced to the Duggar family years ago through 19 Kids and Counting. And while the oldest Duggar kids were just dating at the time, now, many have married and started their own families. The soft-spoken and kind Jill Duggar is particularly fascinating to fans. Nowadays, the 27-year-old is taking care of her two kids with her controversial husband, Derick Dillard. While we used to keep up with Jill and Derick on Counting On, his homophobic and transphobic tweets got the two of them removed from the show.

Jill and Derick still have plenty of followers on social media despite their absence from the show — but not everyone has good things to say about their parenting. Here’s why they can’t avoid the drama.

Fans were concerned when Derick said he was ‘training’ their child

Derick is no stranger to public backlash, so it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to him when his recent post on Instagram is scrutinized. The father of two posted a photo of his young son mopping the floor with the caption, “He’s a good little helper 🙂 training him young lol ;).” Fans were upset with this idea of “training” a child, Pop Culture reports. As one of his followers said, “You train dogs, not people.”

Others were upset because they thought this was proof that Jill and Derick Dillard were following the “Pearl Method” of parenting. This method dictates that corporal punishment should be used against a child in order to teach them obedience. To Train Up a Child, a book by pastor Michael and Debi Pearl, goes over all of this.

Jill and Derick caused uproar over taking their child to central America

There’s no doubt Jill and Derick are committed to doing God’s work, but fans were furious when they could have put their lives and their child’s life at risk. Prior to having their second child, The Hollywood Gossip notes Jill and Derick headed to El Salvador to perform missionary work. The problem was that the couple weren’t licensed missionaries and were never trained on how to improperly handle impoverished life. Not only that, but fans weren’t happy that they took their child, Israel, with them — or that they seemingly ignored the warnings for the Zika virus and quickly became pregnant with their second child upon their return back to the U.S.

Fans are also worried Jill and Derick ‘blanket train’ their kids

The Hollywood Gossip notes fans were upset over a photo Jill posted to her Instagram. The photo was totally innocent — it just showed Jill holding her child in a blanket — but her followers were concerned this photo meant Jill was taking to blanket training her children.

The practice involves seating a young child on a blanket and telling them not to move. If they do move, the experts who have developed this practice suggest striking the child into obedience. There have been whispers that the Duggars are big fans of the method, though we can’t say for sure. Plenty of Jill’s followers stuck up for the photo and said it didn’t suggest this practice, however — but others had their doubts.

Jill’s list of parenting prayers also didn’t go over well

There’s no doubt Jill wants the best for her kids, and she seems to abide by these parenting prayers she posted on her Instagram. She received the list at a Mothers of Preschoolers meeting that Michelle was speaking at, and Jill thinks the list is “super good” according to her caption. Unfortunately, the list put her fans off by the time they reached No. 16, which reads, “That our boys would be glad to be boys and our girls glad to be girls.”

According to Romper, many fans took this as judgment against transgender people. As one fan commented, “Try loving your children the way they are, no matter what gender they choose. Gender is a social construct. It is not unique to any religion.”
